Q: What does it mean if you have high arches?

Having high arch feet means the arches of your feet never lie flat or touch the ground, even when you put weight on them. This can put an excessive amount of weight on the ball and heel of the foot when walking or standing. As a result, high arches can make your foot more prone to pain and instability.

Q: What causes high arches?

Genetics can play a factor as some people are simply born with high arches. Neurological disorders or other medical conditions – like cerebral palsy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and muscular dystrophy – may cause high arches. Another cause of high arches can be muscle imbalances and misaligned bones from injury.

Q: Is it better to have flat feet or high arches?

It’s worth noting that neither flat feet nor high arches are inherently “better” than the other. Both conditions come with their own challenges; flat feet tend to roll inward (overpronation) and may lead to issues like plantar fasciitis, while high arches tend to roll outward (underpronation/supination) which can cause foot fatigue or metatarsalgia.

Q: What shoes do podiatrists recommend for walking?

Podiatrists recommend walking shoes that offer arch support, cushioning, and a spacious toe box. Ideally, the most comfortable shoes you’ll find are ones that are personally fitted to your feet, so it’s strongly encouraged to consult with your podiatrist to better understand your foot type.

Q: Are sneakers suitable for walking?

In general, most sneakers are good for walking, especially orthopedic sneakers, as these are specifically engineered to support your feet. It’s important to note that not all sneakers may be suitable for walking, particularly fashion sneakers that prioritize aesthetic design over functionality.

Q: Are running shoes good for walking?

Yes. Running shoes are built to support your feet, offering cushioning, shock absorption, and flexibility. Be sure to pick a pair that suits your needs, as some high-performance running shoes may have excessive cushioning that can create instability while walking.

Q: What makes a shoe a walking shoe?

Walking shoes are characterized by key features that aim to support your steps. These features include flexibility, cushioning, breathability, and shock absorption. Additionally, walking shoes are made to support the natural motion of walking, helping you maintain balance and stability with your strides.

You can tell if you have high arches by taking a look at your foot; if the arch of your foot appears to be higher and more pronounced, then you may have high arches. You can also check your arches by checking your footprint. Wet the bottom of your foot and step on a piece of paper; if the middle part of your foot appears to be missing from your footprint, then you have high arches.

Treatment for high arches will depend on the severity of your condition. For mild symptoms, possible treatment options can include the use of orthotics, pain relievers, and physical therapy. Wearing a brace, splint, or cast can help gently stretch foot tissue over time. In more severe cases where your feet may be significantly deformed, surgery can help relieve pain and provide more stability.

Sneakers are not only a versatile type of shoe, but they also offer functional support for your day-to-day activities. Some of the best shoes for walking and standing all day are engineered with good cushioning to ensure impact absorption for when you’re on your feet for long periods of time. Look for something like the ABEO MXV Shift, which features a cushioned deep heel cup that absorbs shock when you’re taking daily walks or are even out traveling.
