Treating Overpronation

What Causes Overpronation?

Overpronation is a gait issue that occurs because your ankles and feet are rolling inwards as you walk. Pronation is a normal part of walking, but overpronation happens when this motion is excessive. Overpronation be the root cause of more serious injuries over time, especially if you are active or on your feet a lot.

Next Steps

If you overpronate, you may not even realize it, since it’s not inherently painful, so it’s recommended to get your gait analyzed by an expert. Alternatively, you can take a look at your shoes, and if you notice notice that the soles tend to wear out faster on the inside edge, you are probably overpronating. That being said, it’s important to catch overpronation early because over time, it can lead to more serious injuries, such as shin splints, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and knee pain, just to name a few. Here are a few steps you can take to help mitigate overpronation:

Stretch Regularly

Overpronation is exacerbated when you have a tight Achilles, so stretching your calves can help prevent overpronation. For example, try to stand on the stairs facing the staircase and slowly lower your heels. This will help you to feel a deep stretch in your calves.

See A Physical Therapist

Overpronation can be caused by weak feet and muscle imbalances. This can be true even if you are a runner or a generally active person. A physical therapist will be able to teach you exercises to strengthen these small and often overlooked muscles in your feet and legs than can lead to overpronation.

Try Using An Insole With Arch Support

Some people benefit from varying levels of stability, and you may be able to simply use the shoes that you already have by just swapping the factory insole for one with arch support.
