Neuropathy refers to damage affecting the nerves. There are many different types of neuropathies, but nerve damage typically leads to pain, weakness, numbing, or tingling in one or more parts of the body.
A common type of neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy affects nerves in the peripheral nervous system, which are the nerves outside your brain or spinal cord. Peripheral nerves control the motor nerves and also send sensory information to the central nervous system through the sensory nerves. Notably, the peripheral nerves often show the earliest and most severe effects of neuropathy. It also commonly affects the feet.
Nerve damage can result from metabolic issues (diabetes, thyroid disorders, nutritional deficiencies), infections, autoimmune issues, and external factors like excessive alcohol intake. Genetics and certain medications may also cause neuropathy.
While common neuropathy symptoms include tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness, more serious symptoms can include blood pressure changes, bowel and bladder problems, reduced mobility, and sharp pain.
In some cases, neuropathy can be temporary, treatable, or both. For others, however, neuropathy can be permanent and incurable. This will depend on the severity of your condition. Management and treatment can include medication, physical therapy, along with podiatry and foot care for those who suffer from neuropathy in the feet. Surgery may also be an option to help relieve pain and reconnect cut nerves.
