Q: What is hammer toe?

A common foot deformity, hammer toes pertain to changes in your toe joints that make them point upwards instead of lying flat. A hammer toe usually develops in the second joint of your lesser toes. Although a hammer toe may not affect the way you walk, leaving it untreated could freeze your toe in its curled shape.

Q: What does a hammer toe look like?

A hammer toe looks like a toe with an abnormal bend in its middle joint. This causes the tip to point downward, with the middle joint curving upward, thus resembling a claw or hammer.

Q: How to fix hammer toe?

Some hammer toe treatments include wearing shoes with wide toe boxes to help take pressure off your toes, using orthotics, toe exercises, and using toe pads. Using medical tape to hold your toes in the correct position may also help. Your podiatrist may recommend surgery if other treatments don’t alleviate your hammer toe symptoms.

Q: Does walking barefoot help hammer toes?

Yes. Walking barefoot on soft surfaces can help alleviate pressure and strengthen your toe and foot muscles, improving flexibility in the process. While walking barefoot can help, it’s not a replacement for other treatments and should be supplemented by other management options.

Q: Can you wear sandals on long walks?

Sandals are a great pair of shoes for walking, especially when they are built to provide your feet with proper and adequate support. Look for sandals that offer arch support along with a cushiony footbed, as well as a stable outsole for traction and durability to ensure your feet stay comfortable and secure all day long.

Q: What’s the difference between sandals and flip flops?

In general, flip flops are characterized by a Y-shaped thong strap and are typically more casual, making them great for beach wear or outdoor trips. On the other hand, sandals can be dressier and may feature more varied strap designs. Depending on the style, sandals can be worn for either casual activities or, for women, formal occasions.

Q: What is the purpose of sandals?

Sandals are go-to footwear for warm weather days. Thanks to their open design and construction, they keep feet cool and comfortable in hot climates. They’re also one of the best travel shoes to bring around, as their easy on/off access makes them a convenient pick for whenever you need to quickly switch out footwear.

Q: What is the common feature of men's sandals?

The most common feature of men’s sandals is their open design. A significant amount of the foot is exposed, allowing for breathability when worn. Many sandals for men also have straps and fastenings that secure your feet and provide adjustability for a more customized fit.

Wearing shoes that are too tight or narrow can force your toes into unnatural positions that may develop into hammer toes. Bunions can also contribute to the development of hammer toes, as they can push your toes out of alignment and put pressure on them. Other hammer toe causes can include having high arches, wearing high heels, injury, and toe muscles that are out of balance.
