Q: What are diabetic shoes?

Diabetic shoes are specially designed footwearcrafted to protect diabetics from foot injuries and complications. As diabetic neuropathy causes pain, tingling, and/or numbness, diabetic shoes can help support your feet while managing foot issues from diabetes.

Q: What do diabetic shoes look like?

Diabetic shoes can come in a variety of designs and silhouettes, with many featuring an Oxford shoe design or a design akin to athletic shoes. Most diabetic shoes also share key features, including seamless interiors, a wide toe box, extra depth and volume, and adjustable closures.

Q: Should diabetics always wear socks with shoes?

Socks are essential for diabetics when wearing shoes, as they reduce friction – thereby decreasing the risk for sores and blisters – by creating a barrier between your feet and your shoes. Furthermore, socks help absorb moisture, keeping your feet dry and less prone to infections.

Q: Can you wear sandals on long walks?

Sandals are a great pair of shoes for walking, especially when they are built to provide your feet with proper and adequate support. Look for sandals that offer arch support along with a cushiony footbed, as well as a stable outsole for traction and durability to ensure your feet stay comfortable and secure all day long.

Q: What’s the difference between sandals and flip flops?

In general, flip flops are characterized by a Y-shaped thong strap and are typically more casual, making them great for beach wear or outdoor trips. On the other hand, sandals can be dressier and may feature more varied strap designs. Depending on the style, sandals can be worn for either casual activities or, for women, formal occasions.

Q: What is the purpose of sandals?

Sandals are go-to footwear for warm weather days. Thanks to their open design and construction, they keep feet cool and comfortable in hot climates. They’re also one of the best travel shoes to bring around, as their easy on/off access makes them a convenient pick for whenever you need to quickly switch out footwear.

Q: What is the common feature of men's sandals?

The most common feature of men’s sandals is their open design. A significant amount of the foot is exposed, allowing for breathability when worn. Many sandals for men also have straps and fastenings that secure your feet and provide adjustability for a more customized fit.

Foot problems are a common issue among diabetics. High blood sugar can damage the nerves and blood vessels in the feet, causing nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy), which can prompt numbness, tingling, pain, or loss of feeling in the feet. Thick and yellow toenails, dry and cracked skin, swelling, and sores that don’t heal are also common symptoms of diabetic feet.

Unlike most regular shoes, diabetic shoes are specifically constructed with wide toe boxes to give your feet ample room, especially when suffering from swelling. Diabetic shoes also feature breathable materials – such as leather, suede, or canvas – as other materials may cause excessive swelling and lead to fungal infections. They also have sufficient cushioning while offering arch and heel support to help alleviate any soreness in your feet.

ABEO shoes are engineered to provide your feet with innovative comfort built to last. Our comfortable shoes offer all-day comfort thanks to BIOsystem® Orthotic Technology that delivers the perfect balance of anatomical support, responsive cushioning, and balanced alignment.
